It's a far cry from the proper function of a rightly-ordered state, but it's something. I wonder... if letting the state manage marriage was a mistake, can we agree that the American experiment was also in part a mistake? While the Church had its good years, it seems the full secularism of the Founders has finally come full circle. I'm not sure of the way forward but I think this is an important point to make if we're to avoid the mistakes of the past.
